Ukanafun/Etim Ekpo Crisis: Gunmen On Rampage, Dare FG, Army – Kill 2, Kidnap 1, Burn Market


Despite efforts by the Federal Government and men of the Nigerian Army to put to an end, the ignominious activities of gunmen who have made life difficult for people of Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo local Government Areas, the dare-devil hoodlums have continued their inglorious acts.
Our Crime Desk gathered that in the latest unprovoked attack, the gunmen on Wednesday night invaded the popular Akpan Assiek market located in Ukanafun local government area, killed two persons including a security guard and abducted another simply identified as Nsikak Henry.
It was learnt that the criminal gang had vent their anger on Ukanafun community as revenge over the deployment of soldiers to flush them out.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had in the last one week, deployed soldiers to the troubled local government areas to contend with the gang who have killed more than 100 people and kidnapped, raped and maimed over 500 in the last one year while over 1000 people have fled their homes and relocated to the neigbouring local government areas.
Our Crime Desk further learnt that while the soldiers have been able to have a breakthrough and destroyed the kidnapper’s den, the fleeing gang in desperation, have vowed to make life difficult for the residents and anything they could lay their hands on.
One of the victims of the market attack, told our Crime Desk in tears that his goods stocked in the market have been completely burnt. He noted that some of the goods were purchased on credit. He called for government assistant.
Another victim of the market attack, called on the Federal Government and the security operatives to quickly end the activities of the criminals so that peace and development could return.
Meanwhile, the gunmen are yet to make contact with family of the kidnapped victim as at the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Odiko Macdon said that he is not aware of the attack. He, however, called for calm as security operatives is on ground to maintain security in the troubled areas.
