The youths of Ikot Edor, Ikot Eko Ibom and Ndon Eyo communities in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Friday took to the streets protesting what they called “imposition of the wrong person as village head of Ikot Edor by the paramount ruler of the area”.
Numbering over 200, the protesters called on Governor Udom Emmanuel to advice the paramount ruler of Onna, HRM, Edidem Raymond Thompson Inyang, to allow king makers of Ikot Edor select a village head for the community.
Speaking on behalf of others, prince Ubong Akpabio lambasted the paramount ruler for attempting to impose a person who has never been a family head as village head of Ikot Edor.
He said that the Royal father was sowing seed of discord in the community by working against the wishes of the people and the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Law of 2000.
“What we want is for the paramount ruler to allow king makers follow the law by electing who they think should be the village head. He should not impose somebody on the people because it is a traditional affair which has a lot of implications” Prince Akpabio said.
They called on the Commissioner for local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to invite the Royal father for explanation of his actions to avoid breakdown of law and order in the community.
It would be recalled that the paramount ruler of Onna, HRM, Edidem Raymond Thompson Inyang on September 20, 2017, allegedly imposed one Mr Nkamare Udo Tobby as Village head of Ikot Edor which threw a legal web around him as Barrister Pius Madaki was instructed by litigants to advice the Royal father to follow the way of law and order.
Meanwhile, the protesting youths have sent a letter to the Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel through the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for necessary action, prince Ubong Akpabio revealed
