Udom Sacks Transition Committees

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has approved the dissolution of Ukanafun and Itu Local Government Transition Committees.

In a Press Release signed by the secretary to the State Government, Sir Etekamba Umoren, Governor Emmanuel has accordingly directed Heads of Service of the affected local government to take over the affairs of the council, pending further directives.

Although the government did not give reasons for the dissolution, a source told The Sensor that it is not unconnected with problems in the councils.

The sacked Itu Transition Committee Chairman Mrs. Elsie Esara was accused of high handedness, corruption and mismanagement of funds. The supervisor in the council sent a petition to the House of Assembly and she was invited on at least two occasions to clear her name but she shunned the Assembly.

When she eventually agreed to appear at plenary, Esara made statements which indicted other politicians in the area.

It would be recalled that cold war engulfed Ukanafun local government area in early March, 2017 when the Transition Committee Chairman, Barr. Abasiono Udomfon refused to swear-in the Transition Secretary appointed by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The cold war was said to have led to the gruesome murder of the Secretary, Mr. Ime Atakpa in his home on April 16, 2017.

Following the murder, the police in the course of investigation invited the Transition Chairman and detained him for till date.

Aside the murder of Atakpa, Ukanafun is said to be facing serious security challenges as no fewer than 20 persons have been killed since the beginning of this year in cult and communal crisis related issues.

The Sensor correspondent gathered that the dissolution of the council is a serious relief to the people of the area.
