Shock In Akwa Ibom – As Udom, Umana Meet After Bitter Election – Political Parties React

After the 2015 Governorship election in Akwa Ibom State, fought bitterly by incumbent Governor Udom Emmanuel and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the duo met officially for the first time on Wednesday.

The meeting which sent shock waves across Akwa Ibom has been however described by stakeholders as a positive development and good omen for democracy in the State.

Reacting, the Chairman Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC) Akwa Ibom State Chapter (the umbrella association where all political parties relate) Engr. Martins Inyang told The Sensor via mobile phone yesterday that “the meeting between Governor Udom Emmanuel and Mr. Umana Umana is a very progressive action. Election ended since 2015, the next thing is governance. What Mr. Umana and the governor have done is a display of the spirit of sportsmanship. It is good that both of them have agreed to work together to create the oil and gas free zone in order to create investments and jobs for Akwa Ibom people” he said

According to Inyang, the two politicians have shown that politics is not a do-or-die affairs urging Akwa Ibom people to learn from their actions.

“Today we have a president Muhammadu Buhari who contested four times to win the presidency. Politicians should realize that if they did not win election at a particular time, there is still opportunity to do so on a later date” Engr Inyang stated.

The IPAC Chairman recalled that it was not only Mr. Umana that contested the 2015 governorship election but in PDP there were aspirants that became aggrieved while other political parties also produced candidates that contested; calling on them to sheathe their swords.

“Election is over; let all politicians join hands to develop this state. We must all realize that we have only one state and that State is Akwa Ibom let us come together, work together and build it” he pleaded.

It will be recalled that the 2015 governorship election was one of the most bitterly fought election in Akwa Ibom State.

After the election in which Mr. Emmanuel was declared Governor by INEC, Mr Umana and APC went to court and even succeeded in their unit at the Appeal Court when the election in 21 LGAs were upturned. But the Supreme Court gave another verdict that declared Udom elected in all the LGAs.
