Reigners Church Collapse: Architects Decry Shoddy Job, Condole Govt, families of victims

The Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA) Akwa Ibom State, has condemned what it described as the poor quality of work that caused the collapse of Reigners Bible church, Uyo Village road, which led to the loss of 27 lives, according to police report and physical injury of many others.

However, independent reports put the death toll at over 200 with several other people suffering various and severe degree of injuries.

The NIA, Akwa Ibom State, in a statement signed on behalf of members by its secretary, Arc. Dr. Eno Nyong said it is deeply saddened over the loss of lives and physical injuries suffered by many persons.

The press statement says “we the members of Nigeria Institute of Architects Akwa Ibom State chapter commiserate with the government and people of Akwa Ibom State over the collapse of the Reigners Bible Church building on Saturday December 10, 2016. We pray that God comforts and heals all those who have been affected by this unfortunate incident”

Explaining that its members have visited the site, the NIA added that “we wish to strongly condemn the poor quality of construction that we observed on the site”

NIA further assured the general public of its readiness to work closely with the official investigation panel into the incident to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the collapse in order to forestall any future occurrence of this nature.

It will be recalled that on Saturday 10th December during the service to ordain the founder of Reigners Bible Church, Uyo, Apostle Akan Weeks as Bishop, the roof of the church collapsed and several persons were killed and many others suffered various degrees of injuries.

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, some of his cabinet members and aides were in the church when the incident happened.

Governor Udom escaped without being hurt but most of his aides and commissioners were wounded and are hospitalized.
