It is apparent that the waves and ripples from the recent defection of the Senator Representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Nelson Effiong, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC), are far from abetting, as recent developments have shown.

Making their position known in a press conference held yesterday along Edet Akpan Avenue, Uyo, Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of Oro Nation Extraction expressed surprise and strongly condemned in totality the defection of Senator Nelson Effiong from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as ill-advised, indiscreet, baseless and inconsequential. They regretted that at a time Senator Nelson Effiong, whom they described as a prodigal son and political prostitute, should be consulting and liaising with those who empowered him to the Senate on how best to contribute to the growth and development of his constituency, he rather was busy plotting evil and biting the finger that fed him.

In her remarks at the event, the Deputy Speaker and Member Representing Okobo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Princess Felicia Bassey, said it was saddening and quite disappointing to see Senator Nelson Effiong took the ungrateful and faulty step he took without any pricking of conscience or any attempt to consult with any Member of the Stakeholders and the people by whose sacrifices and votes he went to the Senate, and whom he claims to represent. “It was to my shock and dismay to hear the announcement of the defection to APC of Senator Nelson Effiong who was sent on the platform of the PDP not just to represent the Oro Nation but the entire Eket Senatorial District…We as Oro Nation completely disassociate ourselves from whatever personal action he took and hereby promise to always stand by our governor and leader of the party in the State, His Excellency, Gov. Udom Emmanuel. As for Senator Nelson Effiong, he is strictly on his own,” the Deputy Speaker stressed. Other members who also spoke expressed utter dismay and disapproval for the step taken by Senator Nelson Effiong.

The 10-point position paper, which was presented on behalf of the Stakeholders by the South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Bishop Etim Ante, among other things, categorically stated as follows: That Senator Nelson Effiong did not consult with the people of his immediate constituency and the entire people of Eket Senatorial District before his controversial and questionable defection; that because he acted unilaterally, having been prejudged by his conscience that the Oro Nation would never give him the endorsement for such deadly summersault, we accordingly consider the defection of Senator Nelson Effiong as strictly personal and therefore not in the best interest of the Peoples Democratic Party family in Oro Nation.

The resolutions which were said to have been reached and endorsed in Eket during a recent Stakeholders Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party drawn from the five local government areas of the Oro Nation, also passed a Vote of Confidence on the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency (Deacon) Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, “for him to continue to deliver quality democratic dividends to the people of Akwa Ibom State who never for once had any doubts for fears in his integrity, capability and patriotism”.

It would be recalled that, in a recent interview in the media, Senator Nelson Effiong had said that his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the political platform upon which he went to the National Assembly, to the All progressive Congress (APC), was because his former party lack space for him to manifest his leadership skills and also does not have a future.

On behalf of the Oro Nation Stakeholders of the PDP, the 10-point document was signed by Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey, Deputy Speaker and Member Representing Okobo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly; Hon. Bishop Etim Ante, PDP South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary; Rt. Hon. Effiong Bassey, former Deputy Speaker and Member Representing Oron State Constituency; Hon. Hon. Chief Dr. Esio Okwong Udoh, former House of Representative Member, Oron Federal Constituency.

Other signatories to the document also include, Hon. Orman Esin, Commissioner for Transport and Petroleum Resources; Rt. Hon. Victor Antai, Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Culture and Tourism; Her Excellency, Mrs. Atim Okpoyo, Wife of former Deputy Governor, Akwa Ibom State; Rt. Hon. Chief Barr.
