New Year Terror: Robbers, Assassins Invade Ukanafun Community

In what could be described as New Year terrorist act in Ukanafun and Oruk Anam local government area, armed robbers, hired assassins and kidnappers have made life difficult for the people.

Barely three days into 2017, no fewer than two persons have been killed and one critically injured by hired assassin, while armed robbers are said to be having a field day, robbing and disposing people of their properties. The kidnap gang is also said to be operating without challenge.

The Sensor gathered that the Youth president and a family head in Okoyo community have been assassinated by an unknown gunman. The youth president is identified as Saturday Udofa and chief Obobkit respectively.

It was gathered that the assassination has no political motives, rather as a result of current village headship tussle that has lingered in the community for sometime now. The killing, it was learnt, has thrown the entire community into mourning while residents have fled the area for fear of random arrest.

It was also learnt that kidnappers are also terrorizing Nkek community in the same Ukanafun local government area. As at yesterday, January 3, 2017, the kidnap gang raided the community and abducted a businessman and tricycle spare parts dealer. He was said to have been whisked away from the community to an unknown destination while his car was abandoned.

The armed robbers are also said to be carrying their evil act without challenge. The latest is a case of robbery at Ikot Akai Community in the same local government area. The robbers are said to be operating from house to house.

Meanwhile, the dare devil robbers are also making life unbearable to the residents of Obio Akpa Community and motorists. Incidentally the community is where the wife of the governor, Mrs Martha Udom hails from.

It was gathered that the robbers dressed in Police Uniform and with AK 47 rifle, robbed and dispossessed motorists of their valuables at will.

One of the victims (name with held) told our correspondent that he was on his way to Inen in Oruk Anam when he ran into the robbers. He added that he first thought they were policemen on stop and search only to realize that they were robbers when one of them pointed a gun on his head and forced him out of his car.

“ At this point, I realized that was in the midst of robbers. I had no choice than come down. They ransacked my car, seized my phones and other valuables including money”, he said.

The victim expressed the surprise that the robbers operate without challenge as other victims had their cars parked and robbed.

A Senior Police officer in Ukanafun has confirmed the killing of the Youth president and the family head as well as the kidnapping at Nkek Community. He however, refused to speak further saying that police is investigating the incidents.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Cordelia Nwawe (ASP)said she has no knowledge of any assassination, kidnapping or robbery. She, however, promised to call back once she confirm it. She was yet to call as at the time of filing this report.
