As confusion continue thrilling the National Council of Women Society, (NCWS), Akwa Ibom state chapter on the leadership of the organization, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Glory Edet has admonished women in the state to dissociate themselves from any committee constituted in the name of NCWS, as the Obonganwan Mfon Udokpo’s led administration still remain the only recognized NCWS group in the state.
The decision according to her was born out of the fact that, NCWS and other women groups in the state remain under the watchful eyes of the first lady of Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel, and every decision reached in either of these groups must be only communicated to the wife of the Governor before implementing same.
Addressing the women during the December edition of the NCWS meeting in Uyo recently, the women Affairs Commissioner said, Obong-Anwan Mfon Udokpo remains the only recognized voice of NCWS in the state. She added that the media report about the dissolution of NCWS executive is illegal, and charged members in the state to dissociate themselves from such report.
Dr. Edet warned any group of person who perpetrated disaffection in the state to desist forthwith, as the state government will not take it kindly with such persons. She reiterated that the wife of the Akwa Ibom state Governor, Mrs. Marther Udom Emmanuel is the mother of all women groups and the Patron of NCWS in the state, and was supposed to be fully briefed by the national body, before the dissolution of the group. Since the first Lady is not aware of the dissolution and the circumstances that led to it, the Obong-Anwan Udokpo led Executives remains the only recognized group in the state.
Her word…” her Excellency has not been briefed about the NCWS dissolution. The Ministry of Women Affairs is not aware either. You cannot come to Akwa Ibom and deal with women without the consent of the first Lady and the Ministry of Women Affairs.”
“Her Excellency is not aware of it and I am not aware. So that media report remains invalid and misleading. No body should come to our state and disrespect our own mother, we will not take that.” She added.
The Commissioner stated that when the NCWS National body is ready to do the right the thing, they will come down to the state and meet with the first lady and the Women Affairs Commissioner, to chat a way forward for the group. She said for now, the NCWS in the state has just one front and that is the Obong-Anwan Udokpo led executive. She called on the women in the state to remain resolute, and support the government of the day, for peace to reign in the state.
It will be recalled that there has been a major war between two factions of the NCWS in the state. One of the factions is led by Mrs Meyene Nkwo who was unceremoniously removed from office by a group of women working with the commissioner for Women Affairs.
However, the Nkwo group which supported Obong-Anwan Geraldine Etuk to defeat the commissioner’s group of the NCWS national election, which produced Etuk as Treasure against the wish of the commissioner is the faction supported by the National body of NCWS. The battle for supremacy in the state NCWS seems to be deepening.
