As Akwa Ibom State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, is currently challenging the results of the Local Government Election held in December last year, the party says late commencement of the sitting of Eket Zone of the Election Petition Tribunal is caused by poor working attitude of the Tribunal’s secretary.
The main opposition party in the state believes the main reason the Election Tribunal, Eket Zone, is suffering setback is because of regular absence of its Secretary, Mrs. Maureen Akpan.
It was gathered that the Secretary is engaged by lectures at the University of Uyo.
But APC believes her frequent absence from Tribunal duties is deliberate thus causing severe embarrassment to the Judiciary.
It was further gathered that the party would petition the Chief Judge on frustrating attitude of the secretary.
Meanwhile, the Election Tribunal, Ikot Ekpene Zone began sitting last Monday.
At the Inaugural session, the Chairman, Mr. Etim Okon charged petitioners to cooperate with the Tribunal to enable it conduct speedy trials. Eleven cases were listed for the inaugural session.
Speaking on behalf of the Bar, Chief Victor Iyanam, who led a team representing the APC and its candidates, pledged the cooperation of the Bar to ensure a speedy dispensation of justice. Other counsels representing different parties were Barr. O. B Akpan, (PDP and candidates) and Barr. Utibe Nwoko for Akwa Ibom Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC.
