Gunmen Invade A’Ibom Community …Abduct Monarch

The activities of gunmen that have taken Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo communities hostage in recent times has continued unabated with the kidnap of the Village Head of Ikot Edet in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, Chief Mfon Isaac Udoessien.
The monarch who is a brother in law to a former Head of Civil Service in the State was said to have been abducted by the gunmen in the early hours of yesterday after a heavy gun battle with security operatives drafted by government to provide security in the volatile enclave of kidnappers.
A source in the village who identified himself simply as Enobong, told our correspondent that the abduction of the monarch who is also a retired primary school Headmaster and a former Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Etim Ekpo branch are related to his relentless war against the activities of gunmen who have kidnapped no fewer than eight persons in the village. The Sensor further said that the hoodlums set ablaze houses belonging to people helping security operatives to fight kidnapping, killing in the community while the premises of Rector, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Barr. Israel Affia was equally touched.
He said, “we think the kidnappers came after the Village head because of how he has been opposing their activities”.
Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the monarch is not yet known as the kidnappers are yet to contact the victim’s family.
It would be recalled that a middle aged woman from the same village and sister to Mr. Udo Ekpenyong, a former commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs was recently buried. She was shot dead by gunmen on November 17, 2017 in her family compound, Ikot Oku Usung, Ukanafun Local Government Area.
When contacted, the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Odiko Macdon said that the Police is aware of the kidnap.
He added that Police is on top of the situation and assured that in no distant time, the monarch will be rescued safely and united with members of his family.
“Yes, Police is aware of the incident. When Etim Ekpo Area Command got information of the kidnap, it quickly moved into action. Efforts are being made to rescue him safely and reunite with members of his family,” the command image maker said.
Meanwhile, a security meeting of local government Chairmen has been held with the security chiefs in the State and far reaching decisions taken to address the security challenges.
Macdon while confirming the meeting said, “Security measures are in place, we just concluded a meeting with all the local government Chairmen and the security chiefs in the State. That issue came up during the meeting and it is being addressed.”
