All is not well in Nothern Uruan that has twelve villages following alleged plot by some influential government officials from Mbiaya Uruan to stop Ibikpe Uruan from fulfilling its right to produce the next clan head.
Briefing newsmen in Uyo yesterday after a botched attempt to organize a kangaroo selection at the Traditional Rulers Council in Uyo, orchestrated by the interested politicians from Mbiaya Uruan, President of Ibikpe Development Association Engr. Martin Asuquo Udo decried the level of marginalization perpetrated by Mbiaya politicians against other villages in Northern Uruan.
He alleged that the politicians concerned from Mbiaya include Obong Godwin Ntukude, Mr. Anthony Akan, Engr. Offiong Usen Akpabio, Mr. Obot Essien Ette among others. According to him they have cornered all political appointments and elective positions to themselves and ensured that no other village got anything.
“In recent history, Ibiaku Uruan has produced clan head twice, Mbiaya produced late Chief Bassey Akpan. The stool became vacant upon his demise. It is now the turn of Ibikpe Uruan and we have an accomplished lawyer, who has a heart to serve and who is greatly loved by his people, our village head, Obong (Barr.) Asuquo Nyong Ikpong who should rightfully occupy the seat but we are witnessing intrigues by these politicians that intend to frustrate a natural course of justice and this is unacceptable” he said.
He alleged that the politicians from Mbiaya have introduced money to buy over the village heads who are to select the new clan head.
“it is sad that people could be so desperate and oppress others to the level we are witnessing. The politicians trying to thwart the natural selection process have “kidnapped” the Chiefs, so that our village head cannot reach them.
We were shocked to see the Village Heads at the Traditional Rulers Council on 10th of April after many days of being incommunicado. We gathered that they were “Kidnapped,” given money and are on instruction to come out and support the candidate of the politicians from Mbiaya” Asuquo maintained.
The President of Ibikpe Development Association therefore called on the government to intervene and save them from years of marginalization, maintaining that the Northern Uruan clan head stool is sacred and any attempt to descerate it will bring about negative consequences on the land and its people.
“The traditional stool of Northern Uruan is not a political position. Therefore, it is meant for someone like Obong Asuquo Nyong Ikpong who belongs to the royal family. Introducing politics to it and wanting to foist chief P.J Effiong by Mbiaya could lead to anarchy and this is what we do not want in Ibikpe. We are peace loving and we want peace to reign, government should therefore intervene”. Asuquo Udo pleaded.
Meanwhile, the lawyers of Obong Asuquo Nyong Ikpong have written a letter to the commissioner for local government and Chieftaincy Affairs requesting the ministry to stop Otuekong P.J Effiong from holding up the village heads expected to vote, in a camp, only to bring them out on election day.
The lawyers also demanded for a level playing field, where the date and venue will not be to the undue advantage of Otuekong P.J Effiong and his sponsors but it should be communicated to the parties, so that the election will be conducted peacefully and all parties will be satisfied.
