The battle for the Clan Head of Awa Afaha, the new created Clan in Onna Local government Area by Governor Udom Emmanuel has been won and lost with the emergence of Village Head of Awa Ndon, Eteidung Raymond Inyang as the first Clan Head. He defeated the Village Head of Awa Atai, Eteidung Henry Uffang.
In an electoral exercise that took place at the Chambers, State Council of Chiefs, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Uyo, Eteidung Inyang scored 5 votes out of 10; while one abstained on health grounds.
The new clan head, in his acceptance speech, appreciated the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Mr Udom Emmanuel for creating Awa Afaha clan. He pledged to serve his people with absolute commitment and dedication.
Present at the exercise were the Commissioner and the Permanent secretary of the ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Secretary, State Council of Chiefs and the Secretary of the Traditional Rulers’ Council of Onna LGA.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Victor Antai congratulated the newly elected clan head, and charged him to be fair to all, diligent in service and to run an all inclusive government.
The weeks preceding the election on Monday was soaked with tension as there were alleged manipulation of the election process by external forces.
At least twice, attempts were made by the Ministry of Local Government And Chieftaincy Affairs to hold elections but it failed because some persons holding political office allegedly had interests that were clearly against Chief Raymond Inyang.
Further to this, is the plot by some Village Heads to ensure Chief Raymond Inyang was manipulated out of the chieftaincy battle.
But for the prayers of the people of Awa Afaha who preferred Eteidung Raymond Inyang, plans had been concluded to present the Village Head of Afaha Ikot Edem Udo, Eteidung Akpan Ebong for voting on election day after he was allegedly moved from his hospital bed to an unknown destination.
This was after other chiefs that originally supported Eteidung Raymond Inyang had been allegedly given huge sums of money to vote against him.
While all the politicking was going on though, there were both prayers and revolt in Awa Afaha with the locals either shutting down markets or refusing to do environmental sanitation because of what they thought is betrayal and failure of their leaders to see beyond immediate gains.
The community people believe Eteidung Inyang as Clan Head will bring more development to the area.
Already with his personal funds he built a good Nursery/Primary School in the area, provided boreholes for the people and other social amenities.
Moreover, the people were angry that the chiefs did not fully consider the credentials of Eteidung Raymond Inyang who is a retired banker, Chartered Accountant of international standing who could use his contacts to bring development to the area.
Eteidung Raymond Inyang had also been Village Head for 13years while his rival had been Village Head for 2 years.
This and the fact that Eteidung Inyang is from the royal family, his father and grand-father were chiefs are sufficient reasons, the people think Eteidung Inyang deserved their support.
Awa Afaha, the new Clan created by Governor Udom Emmanuel is made up of ten villages.
