AKHA conducts Public hearing on Road Traffic Mgt Today


Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Transport will on Wednesday conduct a public hearing on a bill for a law seeking to establish a road traffic management authority, to be known and addressed as ‘Akwa Ibom State Road Traffic Authority’.

The essence of the public hearing is to afford members of the public as well as stakeholders in the transport sector an opportunity to contribute their inputs to the bill which is being considered by the legislature. At the end of the exercise, the committee would gather inputs which will guide it in its report which will be submitted to the House for further legislative action.
Accordingly, the House of Assembly Committee on Works and Transport has invited stakeholders, Government and non-Governmental Organizations, Stakeholders in the Transport sector, as well as members of the public to the public hearing.

The public hearing is sequel to the bill sponsored by member representing Itu State Constituency, Prince Idongesit Ituen ; A bill for a Law to establish the Akwa Ibom State Road Traffic Authority and for other matters connected therewith, which is currently before the state house of Assembly.

A release by the Clerk of the committee Mrs. Unwana Idungafa indicates that the public hearing will hold on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 by 10. 00am at Ibom e -Library, Babangida Avenue, Uyo.

Sponsor of the bill, Prince Ituen had while introducing the bill on the floor of the House, explained that the bill seeks to instill sanity in the road transport system, prevent recklessness and guarantee safety on our roads among others. He made reference to LASTMA (Lagos state Traffic Management Authority) in Lagos State, DOPT (Department of Public Transportation) in Cross River State, and similar agency in Rivers State to buttress his point while speaking on the merits of the bill.
The lawmaker also listed revenue generation to the state government, employment generation for our youths, among others as some of the benefits to be derived when the bill becomes law.
The event will be Chaired by the Special Assistant to the Governor of of Cross River State on DOPT (Department of Public Transport), Barr. Edem Ekong. Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Transport and Petroleum Resources, Mr. Orman Esin will be in attendance.
Paper presentations will be handled by the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Akwa Ibom State Mr. Oghene Karo and the General Manager, Lagos state Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Mr. Olawale Musa among others.
