AK PDP Chairmanship Congress: Paul Ekpo Returns

A head of Tuesday’s People Democratic Party, PDP State congress, the incumbent chairman of the Obong Paul Ekpo is set to retain the coveted seat as he is the only candidate that has so far purchased the party form from Uyo Senatorial district where the office was zoned to.

The Sensor gathered that elders of the Party has zoned the office to Uyo senatorial district to enable Eket Senatorial district retain governorship position in 2019.

It was further learnt that the zoning which was also targeted at compensating Obong Ekpo for his loyalty to the Party especially during the last governorship primaries and general elections which saw the emergence of Governor Udom Emmanuel from Eket Senatorial district.

While others from Uyo Senatorial district who had earlier indicated interest to run for the office were said to have bowed out for fear of being disgraced at the congress, Obong Ekpo was given the nod to continue in office by stakeholders with the hope that he would re-enact the 2014 Primaries that produced Governor Udom.

It was however gathered that Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial, district is insisting of producing the State Chairman of the Party. Their argument, it was learnt, is that since Eket Senatorial district has produced governor and the outgoing chairman is form Uyo, Ikono/Ini should produce the party chairman.

Explaining further, the people of the area noted that Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency is currently occupying senatorial position while Abak/ Etim Ekpo/Ika produces Deputy Governor, it is naturally right for them to take the chairmanship seat.

To solidify their position, the Ikono/Ini people are said to put forward Mr. Etetim Awatim as their candidate. Our checks, however, revealed that Mr. Awatim is yet to collect the Party nomination form.

The Sensor has also learnt that Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency is also interested in the chairmanship position with the argument that they neither hold any key office in the present political dispensation.

Our checks also revealed that the Federal Constituency is putting forward Mr. Udo Samuel Ekpenyong, a National Officer of the Party to contest as Chairman.

Like Etetim Awatim, Mr. Ekpenyong is also yet to collect the Party form as at the time of filing this report.

A source told The Sensor that though the elders have already decided in favour of Obong Ekpo, the discordance tune in the Party may fracture the once peaceful and united family in the State.

The source added that Obong Ekpo and the leadership of the Party have a greater task ahead to put the party together to enable it succeed in 2019 elections.
