Tension in A’Ibom Over PDP Congress As Fear Of Imposition Grips Party Faithful

Barely 48 hours to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Congress, there is palpable tension in Akwa Ibom State following plans by few stakeholders to hijack the congress and install their preferred stooge against the wishes of the greater majority of party faithful.

The Sensor investigations revealed that the party in all the 31 local government areas has pitched members against each other especially government appointees and those who want to be relevant in the next political dispensation.

It was further revealed that while list of would be party executives had already been signed, sealed and is waiting for a mere delivery to Udom Emmanuel who is leader of the party in a mock congress, the action is said to have put party supporters in a spoil for war as many of them have been schemed out.

A source told The Sensor last night that compilation of party executive members in the 31 local government areas have been concluded and those whose list have not scale through have vowed to dump the party and join forces with the opposition All Progressive Congress, APC, and wait for them in 2019 general election.

It would be recalled that stakeholders in Ukanafun local government area had recently spoiled for war following the hijack of the party structure by few individuals who sat in the house of a former commissioner in the state to appoint party executive.

The case is not different in Eket Local government area where twelve council chairmanship aspirants have petitioned Governor Udom Emmanuel over the appointment of Frank Archibong as the chairman of the congress committee for the local government area. But the leadership of the party in the state has denied the imposition.

The chairmanship aspirants, it was learnt, have vowed to resist any imposition of party executive on them, noting that if the leadership of the party goes ahead to cause the impunity, they would have no option than to fight for their right.

In Ika local government area, the tension is out its peak as party faithful have vowed to resist imposition of the executive members of the party. The visibly angry party members who are also canvassing for the rotation of the chairmanship seat said that the area would boil again if they are manipulated out of the congress.

The Sensor gathered that the outcome of Saturday’s congress would be a litmus test for Governor Udom who may seek re-election in 2019.

Meanwhile, hope of those aspiring to become council chairmen and councilors have been dashed as the governor is said to be not in a haste to conduct local government election.

The Sensor investigation showed that nothing is happening at the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC to indicate that election would take place even when the tenure of present caretaker committee members would end in less than three months time.

The committee members were sworn-in in July last year to serve for a period of six months to prepare the state electoral body to conduct election. After tenure was renewed even when they were said to have performed abysmally and some have nothing to show.

However, as their tenure is gradually coming to an end, the inactivity at AKISIEC despite the fact that politicians are seriously warming up may be disappointed as the governor is said to be planning to constitute another caretaker committee to take over from the present ones when their one year tenure expires.
